Director of Development

 

Opportunity: SCAN seeks an enthusiastic, experienced and highly motivated Director of Development looking for an opportunity to join a dynamic, mission-driven organization and a strong team of dedicated child welfare professionals and volunteers.

About the Organization: SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia was founded in 1988 to promote the well-being of children, improve parent-child relations and prevent child abuse and neglect through education, public awareness and advocacy. SCAN is the only Northern Virginia organization dedicated exclusively to education and advocacy for child abuse prevention throughout the Northern Virginia region. SCAN builds hope for children and families by implementing effective, evidence-based prevention programs. In the past year, SCAN advocated for 181 of the most vulnerable children who have been abused or neglected through its Alexandria/Arlington Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program; strengthened hundreds of families through Parent Education efforts; and educated thousands of community members via Public Education efforts throughout Northern Virginia.

Description of Position: The Director of Development is responsible for coordinating and implementing all fund development efforts to support the organization’s mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

Development Planning and Monitoring: Work with the Executive Director and Board Financial Development Committee to design, implement, and evaluate an annual fund development plan, including grant applications, special events, individual giving and cultivation of civic support; work with program staff to maintain current knowledge of each program; coordinate/build relationships with the organization’s board members, community leaders, other staff and volunteers as appropriate to achieve fundraising goals; help articulate messages about SCAN’s cause and program impacts; provide staff support for the Board’s Financial Development Committee; remain aware of advancements and trends regarding community-based fundraising and child welfare issues; and collaborate with program staff to support SCAN’s mission.

Grant Proposal Development: Identify grant opportunities; track deadlines; research, write and prepare proposals for renewal and new funding; and cultivate/steward funder contacts among foundation, government, and corporate giving prospects.

Special Events Coordination: Develop, grow, and coordinate SCAN’s annual golf tournament and fall reception event as primary manager of all planning, solicitations, promotions, logistics, and print materials and as supervisor of the part-time silent auction coordinator; solicit sponsors for both events and SCAN’s Allies in Prevention Awards Luncheon; recruit, engage, and support volunteers for each event planning committee; and coordinate smaller fundraising events as opportunities arise.

Cultivate Individual Giving: Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward gifts from individuals, including cultivation of major donors in SCAN’s Circle of Hope; recruitment of new donors; implementation of at least two direct mail campaigns each year, including drafting appeal letters, managing printing/distribution, and processing timely acknowledgement of donations; support planned giving efforts; and oversee the gift management process by supervising the Office Coordinator’s data entry of gifts and by coordinating the gift acknowledgement, recognition, stewardship and reporting processes; work collaboratively with Public Education team in implementing communications plan and strategic use of annual reports, newsletters, media outreach, and other public relations vehicles to raise awareness about SCAN, its mission and impact.

Cultivation of Civic Support: Manage SCAN’s participation in United Way and Combined Federal Campaigns; make presentations about SCAN in the community; and serve as a spokesperson for SCAN.
