Become a SCAN Legacy Donor
You can include SCAN of Northern Virginia in your estate planning (will, trust, retirement fund or life insurance policy) as a lasting and financially wise way to make a gift. Plus your future gift will create a living memorial that makes a difference for children and families in Northern Virginia for years to come.
Types of Bequests
Bequests can take several forms:
- A specific bequest is a gift of something designated
by the donor, such as:
- a specific amount of money, stock or bond, piece of real estate, or other asset
suggested legal language: "I leave [dollar amount or asset] to SCAN of Northern Virginia, 1705 Fern Street/2nd Floor, Alexandria, VA 22302, Tax ID# 54-1473693, to be used for general purposes." - a percentage of an estate
suggested legal language: "I give and bequeath to SCAN of Northern Virginia, 1705 Fern Street/2nd Floor, Alexandria, VA 22302, Tax ID# 54-1473693, the sum of [insert percentage] percentage of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to be used for general purposes."
or
- A residual bequest is made from what is left in an estate after all other bequests have been made. A residual bequest enables you to make specific provisions for family and other commitments first, and then leave the rest to SCAN.
- suggested legal language: "All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, real and personal, I give, devise and bequeath to SCAN of Northern Virginia, 1705 Fern Street/2nd Floor, Alexandria, VA 22302, Tax ID# 54-1473693, to be used for general purposes."
- A contingent bequest takes effect only when other bequests cannot be fulfilled for some reason. A contingent bequest enables you to designate SCAN of Northern Virginia to receive some part of your estate in the event the primary heirs you have named are no longer available to receive the inheritance you have designated.
Other Types of Planned Gifts
Other means of designating a planned gift can include naming SCAN of Northern Virginia as a beneficiary (or secondary beneficiary) of a retirement account or life insurance policy. These options may allow you to give more from a fund that has fulfilled its original purpose, while eliminating taxes that can otherwise largely deplete these assets. At the same time, you set aside an investment in SCAN's ability to protect children and strengthen families for decades to come.
Recognition for Your Planned Gift
We want to recognize the donors who have chosen to create a living memorial by planning a long-term investment in SCAN. When you decide to set aside a future gift for SCAN, please let us know by completing this form. We will include you in our listings of SCAN's Legacy Donors, located in SCAN's Conference room, on SCAN's website, and in yearly annual reports on SCAN's activities and accomplishments.
Taking the Next Steps
Talk with your family and loved ones about your plans and priorities.
Your financial advisor or attorney can discuss your options to determine the best plan for you. Remember, gift planning enables you to give more than you may have thought possible. Planned gifts also help create a memorial to remind future generations of your commitment to healthy children and strong families.
If you don't have an attorney or wish to discuss your planned gift in complete confidentiality, contact:
