How do Educational Parent Support Groups work?
Education parent support groups have no start or end date, so parents can join at any time. Any parent who would like to: improve their parenting skills; meet other parents going through similar situations; and/or is required to complete a program for court/social services purposes, is welcome to attend and will benefit greatly from this program.
At each group session, a trained SCAN facilitator will give a presentation on a relevant parenting topic. For example: appropriate and effective discipline, working with difficult children, child developmental stages, or managing anger and stress. The parents are then given an opportunity to discuss how this topic is relevant to their lives and how they can implement the skills and knowledge presented during the meeting in their daily life. All participating parents are also encouraged to share their personal challenges they have encountered during the week and group members have the chance to offer their own advice and support as a fellow parent.
The support group provides parents with a network of other parents who support and encourage them to keep learning and improving their relationships with their children. Parents learn good parenting skills through modeling; rebuild their self-image by sharing; and grow by reaching out to others.
There are no eligibility or residency requirements to participate in these programs. Registration can be done over the phone or at the actual Support Group site.
The program provides a free children's program for children of all ages. Within this program, children participate in structured activities that can help improve their self-esteem and increase their social skills.
