SCAN's Snapshots of Hope
Jack LeCuyer
SCAN Donor, Former Board Member, Volunteer, and a SCAN Legacy Donor
Part of the SCAN family since 1998
Jack LeCuyer graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1966. After 28 months in Vietnam, he completed studies at the University of Florence in Italy and a Masters Degree from the JFK School of Government at Harvard. He was selected as a White House Fellow in 1977 and completed a long and distinguished career in the Army while serving as the Senior Army Fellow on National Security Policy at the Brookings Institution. After his retirement from the army, Colonel LeCuyer was named Executive Director of the White House Fellows Alumni Association and President of the White House Fellows Foundation.
Jack recently completed his third term on SCAN’s Board of Directors, having served faithfully in that role for nine years. He has been a longtime member of the support team for the annual golf tournament and was among the initial group of SCAN Legacy Donors.
Through his work with the White House Fellows, Jack got to know another White House Fellow: Dave Cleary, SCAN’s founder. As Jack learned more about SCAN’s approach to strengthening families and the way SCAN’s programs work to prevent child abuse, he became committed to SCAN’s mission as well. Jack notes that “Dave’s recruiting pitch to serve on the Board was compelling – and it fit with my own commitment to a lifetime of public service and mirrored the work that my wife Karen was doing as a teacher in one of the Medallion Schools in the Fairfax County School System.”
Jack was a key member of SCAN’s Board of Directors during the organization’s transition from a small nonprofit with most of its focus on the CASA Program into a respected, regional agency with a strong prevention focus, a solid parent education program, and an emerging public education program.
During his service as a Board member, Jack brought insightful knowledge of fundraising and financial management to SCAN’s Board and was a valuable guide in shaping SCAN’s growth and development plans over the last few years. As a result, the organization has become a stronger, healthier, more sustainable organization and a regional leader on children’s issues in Northern Virginia.
During the almost a decade of Jack’s service on the Board, SCAN grew from a staff of three to ten and its budget more than doubled to just over a half million dollars, all the while staying true to its mission promote the well-being of children, improve parent-child relations and prevent child abuse and neglect through public awareness, parent education, and advocacy.
For Jack, this commitment to nurturing children and families runs in the family. His mother, sister, and wife were all members of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, whose national charitable commitment is to Court Appointed Special Advocate Programs across the country, like the one SCAN runs in Alexandria and Arlington. Jack’s wife, Karen, spent her career as a teacher including 17 years in elementary schools in Sacramento, CA and here in Fairfax County while she and Jack raised 3 wonderful children of their own.
Jack and his wife Karen are choosing to memorialize their many years of commitment to SCAN’s mission by adding a codicil to their wills dedicating a future donation to SCAN from their estate. By taking the time to include this intention in their estate plan, Jack and Karen have made sure that their commitment to children and families in Northern Virginia will continue in perpetuity.
Today, as SCAN celebrates its 20th anniversary, Jack remains involved in supporting SCAN as an event sponsor, as a founding member of SCAN’s Legacy Donors, and as a volunteer on SCAN’s Golf Tournament host committee. In many ways, Jack exemplifies the true strength behind SCAN’s growth and evolution over the last 20 years: volunteer leaders who share their time, talents, treasure, and compassion to support the child abuse prevention programs at SCAN of Northern Virginia.
