More than 225 friends of SCAN attended the 5th annual Toast to Hope on November 14, 2007, for an adventurous evening of code breaking and wine tasting to support our community's efforts to treasure every child. Held at the Masonic National Memorial in Old Town Alexandria, the event drew more people and raised more funds than ever before.

The evening included wine tasting, gourmet appetizers, a silent auction and presentation of the annual Cleary Award, and raised more than $40,000 for SCAN's programs.

The Cleary Award

The evening also provided an opportunity for SCAN to award the second annual Cleary Award. Named for SCAN's founder, Dave Cleary, the award was created to recognize individuals and organizations whose dedication and commitment to children and families stands out in ways that significantly make a positive difference in the lives of children.

Delegate Brian Moran, introduced by SCAN Board President Trudy Brisendine, presented the award to Doug Brammer of Verizon. Other elected officials in attendance included State Senator Patsy Ticer, Alexandria Vice Mayor Del Pepper, Retired Delegate Marian Van Landingham and Alexandria Councilman Tim Lovain.

2007 Award Winner

The 2nd annual Cleary Award was awarded to the Verizon Foundation, whose support of the child abuse prevention programs at SCAN has been growing for several years. Through financial grants as well initiatives and other partnerships, Verizon's support of SCAN reflects the Foundation's commitment to violence prevention, a vision of strong communities, and a devotion to the importance of healthy, nurturing families.

"Verizon has a long-standing record of working to improve the communities in which we operate by serving our customers well and supporting organizations that strive to make a difference in those communities," said Doug Brammer, Area Manager, External Affairs, with Verizon. "We look for strategic partners, like SCAN, with whom Verizon can work to make Virginia a better place. By supporting those organizations and the volunteer spirit of our employees, we make a difference in the lives of people across Virginia."
