It's National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and this Pinwheels for Prevention April we have more going on than ever before! Read on for updates on our kick-off events this past week, as well as the many NEW ways you can SUPPORT our Pause for a Child campaign and help us reach more children and families all year long!

OUTSTANDING ALLIES IN PREVENTION AWARDS 

SCAN's 9th Annual Allies in Prevention AwardsThanks to Campaign Sponsor Verizon, SCAN was able to honor five remarkable individuals on April 1st at the 9th Annual Allies in Prevention Awards Luncheon. Christine James-Brown from the Child Welfare League of America provided the Keynote Address, and ABC7's Leon Harris served as emcee. JOIN US THIS SUNDAY AT BOOKS-A-MILLION!

Thanks to Books-A-Million in McLean (one of our many Pinwheel Partners) we'll be having a Pinwheel celebration this Sunday, April 10th, to spread the word about our campaign. Please come out and show your support between 1:00 and 5:00 PM - 10% of ALL PROCEEDS will go to SCAN!

 

Children can make their own pinwheels, parents can pick up resources and other information, and everyone can support SCAN by posting a pinwheel card at the store!

NIGHT OF FUN, FASHION & VIPS BENEFITS SCAN

On April 1st, Pinwheel Partner Caribbean Breeze Restaurant in Arlington hosted its 4th Annual Spring Fashion Show. Proceeds from the event, with special guests including Redskin Fred Davis and past Redskins LaVar Arrington and Brian Mitchell, benefited SCAN's Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program and Niņos Rising.

PARENT ED PROGRAM TAKING PAUSE TO PARENTS

This month, SCAN's Parent Education Program is sharing the Pause for a Child message with the hundreds of parents it touches through parenting classes, support groups and playgroups.

 2011 Ally in Prevention Award Winners

On April 1st, SCAN honored five unsung heroes who go above and beyond every day to protect children and support families across Northern Virginia. Please meet the honorees:

  

In Alexandria, Suzanne Chis is the Director of Social Services and Deputy Director for the City's new Department of Community and Human Services. Read her full bio here.

 

In Arlington, Joanne Hamilton is a Probation Officer for the County's Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Read her full bio here.  

 

In Fairax, Dan Fleig is a Foster Parent and creator of the We-R-Safe child abuse prevention volunteer training program. Read his full bio here.

 

In Loudoun, Laurie Warhol is a Division Manager with the County's Department of Family Services. Read her full bio here.
