SCAN'S ANNIVERSARY UPDATE:

It's hard to believe we're more than half-way through our 20th anniversary year! We've already had wonderful opportunities to mark this milestone...official Proclamations from state and local governments, the ongoing Snapshots of Hope series, and the launch of our new website and this updated eNewsletter!
 
But the celebration continues! In the coming months, we have some very special ways YOU can celebrate with SCAN, including our annual Toast to Hope event and the chance to purchase a beautiful commemorative statue - details coming soon!
 
One more special note:
This month, SCAN is also celebrating the life of Honorary Board Member Senator Joseph V. Gartlan, who passed away last month.  You can read more about his incredible contributions to our community and commitment to Virginia here
 
 
SCAN's Toast to Hope 

 
RESERVE YOUR TICKETS TODAY FOR A VERY SPECIAL TOAST TO HOPE!
 
On Saturday, November 15, 2008, SCAN will host its 6th annual Toast to Hope.  From 6:00 - 9:00 PM, guests will enjoy wine tastings, gourmet appetizers and a Silent Auction at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Old Town Alexandria.

Join us for a nostalgic birthday party for SCAN, and a wonderful evening raising critical funds for SCAN's child abuse prevention programs.

Through the eScrip Program, SCAN can earn 10% of your purchase amounts on thousands of participating products at local stores from August 6 through September 9, 2008.

JOB OPPORTUNITY WITH SCAN
SCAN of Northern Virginia seeks a part-time administrative assistant to serve as our "Operations & Special Events Coordinator." This 20-hour per week position has responsibility for administrative and office organization tasks. The ideal candidate will work 4-5 hours during the business day for 4-5 days per week to provide clerical and office management functions.
 
The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and communication skills; a commitment to SCAN's mission of promoting the well-being of children, improving parent-child relations and preventing child abuse and neglect; and work experience in a nonprofit organization. Bilingual English/Spanish skills would be a plus. EOE

SCAN at the Arlington County Fair 

JOIN SCAN AS WE RETURN TO THE ARLINGTON COUNTY FAIR THIS YEAR!  

SCAN's informational booth and spin art activity were a big hit again last year and we're looking forward to continuing the tradition.  This is a great volunteer opportunity for families - young and old alike. Every volunteer gets a free SCAN t-shirt!
 
2-hour shifts are available for the following days
> Thursday, August 7th (4pm-10pm)
> Friday, August 8th (10am - 10pm)
> Saturday, August 9th (10am - 10pm)
> Sunday August 10th (10am-5pm)

The Arlington County Fair takes place at Thomas Jefferson Community Center which is located at 3501 South Second Street, Arlington VA 22204.

ABCs of Parenting in ENGLISH,
starting September 4th and running through October 23rd, will be held every Thursday from 6:00 - 8:30 PM at the First Assembly of God Church in Alexandria.
Registration starts August 4th!
Call early as the class does fill quickly!

ABCs of Parenting in SPANISH, starting October 28th and running through December 16th, will be held every Tuesday from 6:00 - 8:30 PM at the First Assembly of God Church in Alexandria.

ALL of SCAN's parenting programs are offered FREE of charge and there are no eligibility or residency requirements. Referrals are not necessary and both mandated and non-mandated parents are encouraged to register.
