AUGUST 2011
In case you haven't
heard, SCAN launched a blog this summer thanks
to our wonderful intern, Jenna (more about her
below). Our Building Blocks blog
is your go-to spot for the latest in child
welfare news, creative thoughts for parents,
giveaways and more!
This
week, we're
chatting about volunteers AND
offering an AMAZING giveaway! (Here's a
hint...it just might involve a certain
local football team!)

BACK
TO SCHOOL...BACK TO PARENTING
CLASS!
It's
that time of year again - registration has begun
for SCAN's fall ABCs of Parenting Class in
English. We're gearing up to provide a
new group of local parents with the tools and
knowledge to build stronger, happier
families. (Not to mention provide healthy
meals and yoga for the kids, too!)
We're also educating local
parents through an upcoming Parenting Workshop
on Conflict and Violence at
Home.

THIS
WEEKEND: COME OUT AND VOLUNTEER!
We'll be at the Arlington
County Fair all weekend, making pinwheels with children and
sharing resources with parents. This is a great,
easy way to reach families in our community!
Consider volunteering at our booth, or just stop
by and say hello!

SCAN'S
ANN CAULKINS CELEBRATED
On
August 3, friends of SCAN and its
Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program gathered to
celebrate Ann Caulkins. Ann had been a CASA
volunteer for 5 years before joining the SCAN
staff in 2001. A decade later, Ann has touched the
lives of hundreds of children. Today she
is a CASA Case Supervisor, providing support to
the program's volunteer advocates and helping them
give a voice to abused and neglected children in
the local court system.
SCAN's
CASA Program has already filled its fall training
class, but is always accepting applications and
has a special need for male, African-American and
bilingual Hispanic volunteers.

MEET
SCAN: SUMMER INTERN JENNA
TEMKIN
Thanks to a grant through the
Exxon Mobil Community Summer Jobs
Program, college student Jenna Temkin
spent her summer with SCAN. Jenna is a
rising senior at Knox College in Galesburg, IL,
where she studies Anthropology and Sociology. With
internship experiences at Chicago literacy
non-profit Open Books and the Knox County Child
Advocacy Center, Jenna's top-notch work
resulted in the launch of SCAN's new blog, Building Blocks, as well as the
support of a number of other public education
initiatives.
