DECEMBER 2008

A TIME FOR REFLECTION...

As 2008 draws to a close (and our schedules seem to get busier every day this month!) we're taking time to reflect on our 20th anniversary.  2008 marked 20 years of SCAN's commitment to the children and families of Northern Virginia.  We celebrated through our Snapshots of Hope, official proclamations from the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as regional governments, a beautiful commemorative sculpture and an incredibly successful Toast to Hope just last month.

As the celebration comes to an end, we are more energized than ever before about the future impact we will have on our community.

We hope YOU will consider the many ways you can help us build hope for more children and families next year.  This month, amid the hustle and bustle of the season, take a moment for SCAN and learn more about our volunteer opportunities and donation optionsPlan NOW to make an impact in 2009!

Thank you for another wonderful year of support!  Happy Holidays!

Toast to Hope Guests
TOAST TO HOPE: A CELEBRATION AND A SUCCESS!
On November 15th, more than 260 friends and supporters of SCAN helped to raise a record-breaking $75,000 to support SCAN's child abuse prevention programs.

Held at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Alexandria, the event's nostalgic birthday party theme offered guests the chance to play games, enjoy birthday cake, and celebrate SCAN's 20th anniversary.

Above (L to R): Artist Joe Mullins, creator of SCAN's 20th anniversary commemorative sculpture; Executive Director Diane Charles; Board Member Kimberly Mullins; Lisa Garvin; and Board Member Keither Garvin.

Thank you to the many sponsors, donors and volunteers who made this event possible!

SNAPSHOT OF HOPE:SCAN Volunteer Candace Radoski
Candace Radoski, Volunteer
Candace Radoski found SCAN just a few months after her first son, Jacob, was born in 2002. He was a very challenging infant, and Candace and her husband found that parenting him -- even with the support of friends, family and one another -- to be very difficult. This led her to reflect on her own struggles, and she began to truly understand and appreciate the difficulties other families must face when parenting with fewer resources >>>
