A STORY FROM CASA...
As SCAN's Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program continues its winter training session for new volunteers this month, we thought it was the perfect time to highlight just one example of the amazing things our CASA volunteers accomplish:

Tim Stock has been a volunteer with CASA since 1999 and has advocated for many, many children during that time in both Alexandria and Arlington.

His most recent case* involved two children whose parents recently graduated Family Drug Treatment Court. In addition to his regular duties of visiting the family and checking-in at least monthly with the treatment providers, Tim worked to understand why the 10-year-old continued to struggle in school. Tim helped the parents learn what they could do at home to provide additional support. During some particularly challenging times, Tim assisted the parents in wading through governmental agency bureaucracies so that they could take necessary steps to remedy problems.

When the 10-year-old wanted to make a speech at his parents' graduation from Drug Court, Tim helped the child write down his thoughts and then typed up the speech.  When the child read it aloud in the court room, it was an extremely heartwarming moment.  The parents spoke in Court about their deep appreciation to Tim for his encouragement and support.  The children show their appreciation by enveloping Tim in hugs whenever they see him!

* Personal details have been changed to protect the family's privacy.

We thank Tim - and all CASA volunteers - for their unwavering commitment to the children for whom they advocate!

SCAN BOARD MEMBER TESTIFIES AT VIRGINIA BUDGET COMMITTEE HEARING

Tiffany Payne, MSW, SCAN's Board Secretary, recently testified at a Virginia House Appropriations and Senate Finance hearing.  She requested that leaders consider the increased need for family and prevention services in times of economic hardship:

"...child abuse and neglect rates in most Northern Virginia jurisdictions increased in the fall months of 2008 compared to the same time a year before.  Fairfax County has reported an increase of 23% and Arlington has reported an increase of 38%.Child abuse hotlines are also hearing the stresses of parenting...

"This is just the time when support for parents and caregivers is most needed.  This is not the time to cut back on services.  It is the time to raise awareness and remind parents and families that they are not alone; that there are ways to work with their children and ways to keep children safe."

Tiffany's testimony provided an outstanding image of both SCAN and the children and families we serve today.  Thank you, Tiffany!

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of SCAN.  You are helping us build hope for children and families across Northern Virginia!
