SNAPSHOT OF
HOPE:
Dave
Cleary, Founder of
SCAN
Learn more about SCAN
through the people from our past, present and
future.
Dave Cleary's years
in the Minnesota State Legislature and personal
involvement with children convinced him that
ensuring positive parenting and nurturing
environments for children could make a dramatic
difference in reducing crime, incarceration, and
other community ills. Yet, in the mid-1980s,
Northern Virginia had no organization
specifically focused on child abuse

10 NEW VOLUNTEERS JOIN
CASA
Ten new
CASA volunteers are welcoming the New Year by
advocating for children in our local court
system. Seven of the new volunteers
have already been assigned cases and are
advocating for 11
children!
On November 16, 2007, the
volunteers were sworn-in
as CASA volunteers by Alexandria Judges Nolan B.
Dawkins and Constance
H. Frogale, and Arlington Judge George D.
Varoutsos at the Alexandria
Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
SCAN's Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program
staff
were joined by friends and family members of the
graduates, Diane Charles,
SCAN's Executive Director, and special guest,
Alexandria City Councilman Tim
Lovain.
This class brings a wealth of
knowledge and a wide variety of professional
and academic backgrounds to the CASA Program, and
most importantly,
compassion for our community's children.
Please
join us in welcoming Amy Cable, Jennifer Catton,
Beth Donnelly, Rene Gornall,
Kristine Ivardsdotter, Deej Lundgren, Millie
Mateu, Teresa McPalmer,
Mary Patterson, and Celia
Taylor.
