JANUARY2009

A NEW YEAR WITH NEW CHALLENGES

Just as 2008 drew to a close, the Washington Post ran an article on the increase of child abuse and neglect in our region due to economic influences. (Read the full article here.)  We've just started to see the impact that added stress from employment, housing and finances can have on families.  With this in mind, we have a renewed energy - and responsibility - to spread the word about our many parent education programs in 2009.

Please share information with people you know about our FREE Educational Parent Support Groups, safe places where parents can share their daily frustrations and triumphs in a supportive environment and learn new strategies from each other to deal with these challenges.

Don't forget that SCAN also publishes the Parent Connection Resource Guide, a comprehensive listing of parent resources across Northern Virginia offered by SCAN and more than 40 other organizations.  This is another great source of support for parents!

As a new year begins, we hope you'll have a renewed commitment to SCAN and the unique opportunity we have to support parents and prevent child abuse before it ever starts.  Take a moment to explore SCAN's volunteer opportunities and donation options, and have a very Happy New Year!
