WHAT ARE YOUR SPECIAL SUMMER PLANS?

Do they happen to involve SCAN?
We hope you'll take time this month to consider new ways you can help us build hope for children and families:

Volunteer!

From caring for children during a parent support group to stuffing envelopes to staffing a table at a local community fair, we need you!
Make a donation!  If your summer schedule is too full to make a new volunter commitment, consider an easy-to-do online donation to help support our many growing programs this summer.

CASA Training Class Spring 2008
19 NEW VOLUNTEERS JOIN SCAN's CASA Program
SCAN's Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program recently swore in 19 new volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in the local court system.

This new group of volunteers is the most ethnically and culturally diverse class SCAN has ever had, a tribute to recent efforts to recruit and train a more diverse volunteer base.

Please help us welcome Nancy Beronja, Celika Bonivento, Donna Brazier, Ricky Brown, Christine Chambers, Donya Dickerson, Patricia Douglas, Jennifer Gillyard, Sandra Hayes, Claudia Hinojosa, Traci Jenkins, Lindee Lenox, Shakira Mack, Kara Moore, Melina Olmo, Margot Paz, Jamila Shand, Lana Shawa, and David Hwa.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR CHILDREN & PARENTS!
SCAN needs children's program coordinators and volunteers for English and Spanish speaking Parent Support Groups
Volunteers are needed to implement developmentally appropriate activities with children while their parents participate in SCAN's ongoing, weekly support groups.

Coordinators are provided a modest stipend and are in charge of planning and organizing materials necessary for the children's program.

Volunteers are expected to be available on a weekly basis to support the coordinator and interact with the children.

Substitutes are necessary to help fill in when our regular volunteers are unavailable, and will be solicited by e-mails or phone calls on an as-needed basis.

SCAN Arlington Proclamation

LOCAL GOVERNMENTS HONOR SCAN FOR 20 YEARS OF IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

On June 24, the Arlington County Board presented SCAN with an official proclamation in honor of its 20th anniversary (above).  The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors also recognized SCAN's two-decade history with a proclamation on June 30.

Since March, SCAN's 20th anniversary has also been recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia, the City of Alexandria, Fairfax County and  Prince William County.

DC EXAMINER HIGHLIGHTS SCAN, DIANE CHARLES IN ITS DAILY "3-MINUTE INTERVIEW"  DC Examiner Interview with Diane Charles

Earlier this week, DC Examiner columnist Susan Ferrechio interviewed Diane Charles, SCAN's Executive Director, for a discussion on how we reach parents and why SCAN's Parent Education is so important.
SCAN'S ALLIES IN PREVENTION COALITION STAYS BUSY THIS SUMMER  Allies in Prevention Coalition Logo
Last month, SCAN hosted the quarterly Allies in Prevention Coalition meeting at the Cascades Library in Loudoun.  Donna Vanik, from Loudoun County Public Schools - Head Start, gave a fantastic presentation on The Power of Play. SCAN also provided fact sheets on the subject in English and Spanish.

In addition to professional development, Coalition members had an opportunity to reflect on public education efforts made in April for National Child Abuse Prevention Month, as well as network with other members.

SCAN and the Coalition are also in the beginning phases of planning a special Allies in Prevention outreach event to take place in Prince William County this fall.  Stay tuned for more information!
