JULY
2010
 Summer is officially
here. You may be thinking of vacations
and fun by the pool, but for many families
it can be an especially challenging time of
year. More time at
home, childcare
issues and safety
concerns can cause additional
stress, frustration and isolation for
parents.
Before you head out for the 4th of July
weekend, please consider making a donation to
help SCAN support parents and keep kids safe all
summer long!

SCAN ON
TELEMUNDO!
In June, SCAN worked with
Telemundo's Telenoticias Washington for a
segment on parenting and positive
discipline. The piece aired as part
of the network's series La Buena Vida.
Watch the video to see a family
in SCAN's ABCs of Parenting class interviewed, as
well as class facilitator Ana Maria Gomez!

NEWS ABOUT
PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS
Due to funding restraints, as
of July 1, 2010 SCAN will be restructuring its
educational parent support group offerings and
thus consolidating our four parent support
groups to two that will meet in Alexandria (one in
English & one in
Spanish).
And
remember -while many local
parenting resources do not continue over the
summer months, SCAN'S Educational
Parent Support Groups do! They
will continue to provide a place for parents to
share frustrations, learn new strategies and
celebrate their family triumphs all summer
long.

WHO IS SCAN?
MEET GISELLE & JO ANNE, MEMBERS OF SCAN'S
ALLIES IN PREVENTION
COALITION
 Just last week, Giselle Pelaez
and Jo Anne Renton visited the radio studios of
Clear Channel Communications. They weren't
just there for a tour - in fact, they were
recording two new Parenting Today radio
shows for SCAN with Executive Director Diane
Charles.
Parenting Today is a regular
segment produced by SCAN and Clear Channel focused
on helping parents build stronger families.
SCAN recently started inviting special guests -
like Giselle and Jo Anne - to bring their own
knowledge and expertise to the recording studio,
and ultimately to the thousands of parents
listening to popular radio stations like HOT 99.5
and WMZQ 98.7 on weekend mornings.
Giselle works for the Center for Alexandria's
Children, and Jo Anne is with the Virginia
Cooperative Extension, but both are also members
of SCAN's Allies in Prevention
Coalition. Through the Coalition, they
Network with other child advocates, gain valuable
public education materials AND find opportunities
- like the radio show - to
reach a much broader Northern
Virginia audience with messages of
support and prevention.
