JUNE 2008 / SPECIAL
EDITION
From the desk of Arlington
County Board
Member BARBARA FAVOLA: I know
you care about strengthening our Arlington
community. That's why I wanted to share with
you how one local organization is making a
difference by protecting children and
strengthening families here in our
region.
I hope you'll
take a few minutes to read through the stories in
this newsletter and consider how you could
support SCAN
(Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern
Virginia as a
volunteer, donor, or community partner. SCAN sends
out an e-newsletter like this one once a month to
local supporters and the newsletters are filled
with stories of how volunteers are advocating for
children, supporting parents, and educating our
community about the importance of positive
parenting. I am an Honorary Board member for
this important organization and I am so proud of
the impact they are having here in our community.
I know you will agree with me that
supporting our children and families here in
Arlington is critical to our community's future.

SNAPSHOT OF HOPE
Sabrina Black, CASA
Volunteer
Learn more about SCAN through
the people from our past, present and future.
Since moving to the
Washington DC area from Texas in 1988, Sabrina
Black has worked as a paralegal for the U.S.
Attorney's Office in Alexandria, helping to
prosecute federal drug cases since 1989. Early on
in this job, she saw a lot of young men and women
wrapped up in the drug scene and she often
wondered about their families - particularly their
children >>>

 LOCAL TEEN RALLIES
SUPPORT FOR
SCAN Every year, SCAN focuses on public
education and outreach in April during National
Child Abuse Prevention Month. This year,
SCAN was lucky enough to have help
from Alexamarie Allen, a Fairfax County
eighth-grader.
After reading
about child abuse on the Internet, she decided to
do something. Alexamarie and her mother
contacted SCAN, and were able to organize an
outreach and fundraising activity in their own
community. Their efforts were rewarded with
over $500 in donations!
Many thanks to the kind commuters
who donated and witnessed for themselves the true
compassion these young people have for the
children and their families who suffer from child
abuse. And of course, SCAN is grateful for
Alexamarie's inspiring work to help children in
her own community.
