OUTGOING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
DIANE CHARLES RECEIVES MULTIPLE HONORS
Earlier this Spring, Diane
Charles announced her decision to step down as
SCAN's Executive Director. As she prepares
to leave this summer, many local organizations are
taking the opportunity to honor her commitment and
enthusiasm for the children and families in our
community:
>
On May 19th, the Women's Giving
Circle of Alexandria honored Diane for
her leadership with The Giving Circle's first
Community Gifts, as well as her
collaborative spirit and commitment to making a
sustained difference in the lives of Alexandria's
most vulnerable families.
> On May 20th, the Alexandria Bar
Association's Liberty Bell Award was given
to Diane for her work with SCAN's
Alexandria/Arlington CASA
Program.
> Tomorrow, June 2nd, the
Alexandria Regional Council of the United
Way will honor Diane as well
as Fran Becker, outgoing director of
Carpenter's Shelter.
A farewell reception for
Diane has been planned for late June. If you
are interested in learning more, please contact Diana
Scott.

WHO IS SCAN?
MEET MEAGHAN, A NEW PARENT
ED VOLUNTEER
 Meaghan Morris joined the
SCAN team just a few months ago, in March 2010,
but with the experience and commitment that she
brings to SCAN, we hope she will continue to
volunteer for years to come. Meaghan's initial
interest was with SCAN's Alexandria/Arlington CASA
program but with a demanding job she found a
better fit as the Children's Program Leader for
the ABCs of Parenting program this spring. Meaghan
comes to SCAN with experience living abroad and
speaking Spanish, teaching preschool children and
working with art programs for young
girls.
During this spring's session of ABCs,
Meaghan quickly took the initiative to carry out
the lesson plans and manage a classroom of
entertaining, yet sometimes challenging 4 to 6
year olds. One week when a touchy subject was
brought up by one child, Meaghan expertly
facilitated discussion with the children and took
responsibility to address the issue with several
parents before the night was over.
Meaghan's consistency and leadership
within the SCAN team has been so crucial during
this most recent session of ABCs and we look
forward to working with her in the future!
