MARCH 2011

SCAN's Pinwheel PartnersWhat an exciting time for SCAN! This month we are busy preparing for the kickoff of our annual Northern Virginia Child Abuse Prevention Campaign in April.  In addition to hosting our annual Awards Luncheon and distributing tens of thousands of Pause for a Child public education materials across Northern Virginia, we'll also be launching the PINWHEEL as the new symbol of support for child abuse prevention!

This is where YOU come in: we need individuals, organizations and companies to support this new symbol. Learn how EASY it is to help us in the first article below.

MEET OUR FIRST PINWHEEL PARTNERS!

SCAN's Pinwheel PartnersWe're thrilled to announce that we've already had local businesses jump on board as Pinwheel Partners!

 > Local design firm Creative Elegance Interiors posted our badge on their website and is donating a portion of their March AND April profits to support our programs.

> The Back to Health Center is offering our Pinwheel Partner Cards for a $1 donation, then hanging them in their practice during the month of April.

> Books-A-Million in Old Town is hosting a Pinwheel Partner day on April 10th for SCAN to create handmade pinwheels with children and distribute campaign materials.  Books-A-Million is also donating a portion of their proceeds that day to support SCAN's programs.

There are SO MANY WAYS to get involved! Please contact us and we'll help you find the perfect way for your group to make a difference in April.

WHO IS SCAN? MEET ROSA LANDEROS

SCAN Staff Member Rosa Landeros

Rosa was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico where she earned a degree in Social Work and carried her passion for working with families to the US. She has lived in Alexandria, VA since 1991 and since 1998 has worked as a Parent Liaison for Alexandria City Public Schools. She is the proud mother of two young, successful adults and looks forward to bringing her energy to support SCAN's concentrated efforts with the immigrant, Hispanic population.

In addition to working in the office several hours a week, Rosa is facilitating a weekly ongoing parent support group in Spanish at Good Shepherd Catholic Church and will be conducting periodic workshops in the community based on the culturally-relevant materials she develops for Hispanic parents.

Rosa Landeros joined the SCAN team in February as the Spanish Outreach Facilitator. This new position is funded through a CareFirst grant and support from Giving Circle of Hope and the Northern Virginia Community Foundation. The funding allows SCAN to focus on developing culturally-specific materials for the large immigrant, Hispanic population in Northern Virginia.

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of SCAN's programs. To learn more about ways you can support SCAN, please click here
