MAY 2010
Thank you to everyone who helped kick off our 2010 Northern Virginia Child Abuse Prevention Campaign Pause for a Child last month!  We successfully reached thousands of community members through our public education materials, radio shows and media coverage. (Not to mention our fast-growing Facebook cause!)

May is National Mental Health Month, a relevant opportunity to consider the importance of mental health for both childSCAN Board Member Mary Kudlessren and parents in our community.  Board Member Mary Kudless, MSN, recently taped an interview with Comcast
Local/CNN Headline News highlighting the importance of positive parenting as a way to ensure children's mental health and SCAN's public education efforts to support positive parenting.  Mary is the Deputy Director for the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board.

A SPECIAL EVENT TO FIND SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS
SCAN's Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program offers a unique volunteer experience speaking up for children, and it also has unique needs. On May 13th, the CASA Program will host a special Multicultural Volunteer Recruitment Social Event to publicize its special need for African-American and bilingual Latino volunteers.

SCAN SPEAKS IN THE ALEXANDRIA TIMES
Last week, the Alexandria Times published a Letter to the Editor from SCAN's Executive Director Diane Charles.  The letter commented on the recent Pediatrics report that provided the best evidence yet that spanking children causes aggression later in childhood.

Diane's letter brought attention to the report, but also to SCAN's Pause for a Child campaign and the need for parent support resulting in healthier, nurturing forms of discpline.  The letter was able to suggest readers learn more about SCAN's 4 parent support groups in Alexandria and Fairfax.

WHO IS SCAN?
MEET LINDA, A 10-YEAR CASA VOLUNTEER
Linda Johnson was sworn-in as a CASA volunteer in April 2000. Over the past 10 years she has advocated for over 20 children in Alexandria, and has become one of the program's most reliable and committed volunteers.

Being a CASA volunteer is a demanding endeavor, yet Linda often willingly takes on a new case as an existing case is finishing up, and has reported some of the highest number of volunteer hours during a given month.

Linda is known for her comprehensive approach to advocacy, making sure that she has covered all bases in order to provide invaluable information for the Judge.
SCAN and the children of Alexandria and Arlington are so fortunate to have Linda as a volunteer!

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of SCAN.  You are helping us build hope for children and families across Northern Virginia!
