CASA
TAKES A FIELD TRIP
Volunteers from SCAN's CASA
Program recently visited the Natural History
Museum to see the exhibition Race: Are We So Different?
The exhibit explores the concept of race from
scientific, historical, and cultural perspectives,
challenging visitors to ask questions, think
critically and talk about the issue and their own
experiences. CASA volunteers gather for trips,
trainings and other events throughout the year
as part of their
in-service commitment to further develop
their skills as advocates for children in
Alexandria and
Arlington.

SCAN: ZAYDA GALVEZ
SCAN
is GROWING!
Zayda Galvez (pictured at right) recently joined
the SCAN team as a part-time Children's Program
Coordinator for our ABCs of Parenting Classes. In
addition to being bilingual in Spanish and
English, Zayda joins our Parent Education team with a wealth
of experience working to help families of various
backgrounds in her position of Case Aid at the
Alexandria Health Department, where she has been
employed since 2009. Zayda is originally from
Guatemala, having immigrated to the U.S.
approximately 16 years ago. She has two children,
Andrea who is 14 years old and Javier who is 10
years old. Zayda notes: "I am very excited to join
SCAN as the new Children's Program Coordinator. I
believe parents need help, support, and
information on the incredible journey of raising
children and SCAN fulfills these needs." Welcome,
Zayda!
