SCAN
Thousands of families
across our community are back to school this
month, and we're hoping you're planning on
staying involved with SCAN this season as well!
In the next few months, our 20th
anniversary celebration will end with a bang
- including Toast to
Hope and the sale of our
beautiful, limited-edition commemorative
statues. See below for more details on
these special opportunities to celebrate, as
well as other ways to learn
about SCAN's history, volunteer with our programs
or donate online.

SCAN HONORS
BOARD MEMBER GAIL LEDFORD WITH THE 2008 CLEARY
AWARD
On September 7, 2008,
SCAN Board Member Gail Ledford, PhD, was
recognized for her commitment, compassion and
courage for SCAN and the children and families it
serves with the 2008 Cleary Award. Gail has served
on SCAN's Board of Directors for 14 years, and has
played countless roles in both its growth and
success.

SCAN will host its 6th annual Toast to Hope on Saturday, November 15,
2008, from 6:00 - 9:00 PM at the George
Washington Masonic National Memorial in
Alexandria. We expect more guests than
ever before!

nostalgic birthday party for SCAN will be a
wonderful evening raising critical funds for
SCAN's child abuse prevention

MORE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN PRINCE
WILLIAM
SCAN's Allies in Prevention
Coalition has partnered with Prince William
Partnerships for Health and the Prince William
Child Protection Partnership to host the
Greater Prince William Area Allies in
Prevention Breakfast Summit on October 7,
2008 from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. in Woodbridge,
VA.
With special guests
Virginia State Senator George
Barker and SCAN Board Member
Dr. Molly Davis from the
Department of Social Work at George Mason
University, the event will focus on how
collaboration can help us reach more families
across Prince William. Attendees will enjoy
valuable networking, a buffet breakfast and a free
prevention toolkit, and must RSVP by calling the
SCAN office at 703-820-9001.

CELEBRATE 20 YEARS OF SCAN WITH
THIS SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE SCULPTURE!
SCAN is proud to offer this
commemorative sculpture to honor both our history
and our commitment to many more years preventing
child abuse and neglect here in Northern Virginia.
For a donation of $25 or more, you
will receive a beautiful, lasting reminder of the
thousands of children and families SCAN has
touched over the last two decades. The original
artwork was created by local artist Joe Mullins,

How to Work With Schools to Help Your Child
Succeed Monday, September 15,
2008 7:00 - 8:30 PM Anne Lipnick with
the ACPS Special Education Parent Resource Center
will present to our Monday night English-speaking
parent support group about how parents can work
together with schools to help their child
succeed!
Discipline
IN SPANISH Monday, September 22,
2008 7:00 - 9:00 PM Ana Maria Gomez, a
Spanish-speaking family specialist and home based
counselor, will speak to families at the
Springfield/Franconia Resource Center about
Positive Discipline. This workshop will be in
SPANISH. Please call the Center to register

Basic Infant/Toddler Nutritional
Needs and WIC in ENGLISH &
SPANISH
Friday, September 26,
2008 10:00 - 11:30 AM Uzma Quraishi with
the Women/Infant Child (WIC) Nutrition Services
Program will present to parents at our
Spanish-speaking playgroup on basic infant/toddler
needs and how WIC can help families meet their
young childrens' nutritional needs. Workshop will
be presented in English and interpreted in
Spanish.
