SCANStop: Why I’m carting shiny blue pinwheels around with me everywhere…

March 22, 2012

This week’s post is straight from the desk of our Development Director, Karen Price. She’s been busy in recent weeks working with local businesses who’ve signed up to be Pinwheel Partners.  Interested in where she’s been and why she’s carrying all of those blue pinwheels? Read on!

Watching the Amazing Race contestants this week carting around their Travelocity Roaming Gnomes actually kinda reminded me of the last few weeks I’ve spent visiting this April’s Pinwheel Partners with my little blue pinwheel in hand.  This year, we have a great group of 16 (!) local businesses signed up to support child abuse and prevention month as Pinwheel Partners.  Here’s some ways they are doing it:

TD Bank locations all over Northern Virginia will be collecting change for SCAN!  Just go into any branch with your loose change, use one of their change counting machines and tell them you want the proceeds to go to SCAN.  What a great chance to get the whole family involved in some philanthropy!

Ah Love Oil and Vinegar in Shirlington is not only offering pinwheels for sale all month long, but they are also hosting a special 15% on the 15th day.  On April 15th, they’ll have food and samples and 15% of every purchase will go to SCAN’s programs!

If fashion is more your thing, the Women’s Association of Northern Virginia is hosting a fashion show to benefit SCAN on 4/11.

You can buy your very own pinwheel at St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub in Del Ray or any of the following businesses:

Fish Market in Old Town

Pop’s Ice Cream in Old Town

Virginia Commerce Bank in Del Ray

Blanca’s Bridal & Florist in Westover

Kinderhaus Toys in Clarendon

Nirvana Reflexology Spa in Shirlington

Ruby Tuesday will be donating 20% of proceeds at the Eisenhower Avenue location to SCAN on April 25th, if you mention SCAN to your server.

They aren’t the only ones donating a portion of their proceeds to SCAN.  Check out these other Pinwheel Partners:

Visit http://www.joangoehler.com/ and make a note of SCAN when you purchase something – 10% of website sales will be donated to SCAN.

Buy a pinwheel for $1 and Monday’s Child will match your $1 and pay the sales tax on your purchase!

$1 from every ad sold in the Alexandria Times in April will be donated to SCAN.

It’s going to be a busy month!
