NEWS: 2 SCAN Volunteers Inspire Giving this Holiday Season

December 10, 2014

December 10, 2014

Last year, over 200 volunteers made SCAN’s work possible. This month, two of those volunteers — who made the decision to donate money in addition to their time at SCAN — shared their thoughts on why financially supporting SCAN has become an important compliment to their volunteer work, and invited other volunteers to consider doing the same. The messages from Leana Katz and Kelly Harbitter were sent out to SCAN’s volunteer base earlier this month, and are being shared again here during our most critical fundraising season. You can download the letters from Leana and Kelly here, or continue reading below:

Dear Volunteers,

019As a SCAN volunteer, I know what it is like to give one’s time and energy to a cause in which you believe strongly. This is, however, the season of giving, which makes it the perfect time to think about giving even more.

As a CASA volunteer for the past seven years, I know that I have made a difference in the lives of the children in my cases. I could not have done this without the help and dedication of SCAN’s staff. They have always been there if I’ve had a question, needed feedback on a report, or just needed to talk over my case with someone besides my own self.

Through the years of popping into SCAN’s offices and meeting with supervisors, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about SCAN’s other programs and initiatives – such as their parenting classes at TC Williams High School, Sonia’s Parenting Today Radio program, the Darkness to Light child sexual abuse prevention program, and the Allies in Prevention Coalition – to name a few.

Every day the staff of SCAN is working hard to support parents, advocate for children and strengthen families in our communities. To do so, SCAN relies on corporate and private donations in combination with state and federal grants. A couple years ago I was inspired to begin donating to SCAN. I did so, in part, because my husband and I were at a place when it became financially feasible, but more so, because I believe that local children and families are stronger and safer because of the work that SCAN does each and every day.

If you decide to make a gift to SCAN, you have the option of making a one-time gift or signing up to make monthly contributions. Monthly giving allows you to affordably make a more meaningful annual gift. Remember, no gift is too small!

And believe me, the staff at SCAN truly appreciates any and all financial donations. Each and every time I’ve given, I’ve received a personalized thank you note in the mail. Remember, SCAN literally could not do the work they do without the generosity of people like you and me. So, as you think about gifts and giving this holiday season please do consider making a gift to SCAN. It will be more appreciated than you could have imagined!

Sincerely,

Leana Katz, CASA Volunteer, Circle of Hope Member

Dear Volunteers,

kellyh_finalforblogI contribute to SCAN because – as a volunteer – I see first hand how this organization’s work makes a positive impact in the community where I live.

As this season of giving approaches, I recognize you all receive many requests for financial contributions to many worthy causes. This year, I invite you to consider making a contribution to an organization you know very well: SCAN of Northern Virginia.

As a CASA volunteer, I have seen families recover from trauma and children find safe and permanent homes because of the education, support, resources and advocacy that SCAN provides. I imagine that you, too, have witnessed first-hand the immense value of this organization.

You already give generously of your time to SCAN’s mission, and I know the organization’s board and staff are forever grateful for your commitment. Indeed, volunteers are the lifeblood of SCAN’s ability to reach out to our communities. But, like any business, the organization also requires financial support for administration, staffing, outreach and operations.

SCAN provides essential support to families and children in our community, helping to prevent child abuse, and provide services for families in distress. Through its parent education classes, community outreach, and advocacy for children involved in the judicial system, SCAN provides a holistic network of child abuse awareness, prevention and recovery.

Sadly, there is a great deal of work to do in our community. Nearly 10,000 children were reported abused last year in Northern Virginia. Over 160 children required advocates in the juvenile and family court system. Parent education and effective advocacy can help address the current need, and reduce potential abuse in the future. But it takes a significant investment to make that happen. When I considered these resource demands, I wanted to augment the time I gave as a volunteer with a financial gift to the organization.

Any donation, large or small, will help a child and family in need in our community. SCAN has many ways individuals can contribute, and I encourage you to take a look at the innovative sponsorship opportunities and individual giving options available.

Again, thank you for all you do for SCAN – your donation of time is the most important gift of all!

Sincerely,

Kelly Harbitter, CASA Volunteer, Circle of Hope Member
