Parent Support

At SCAN, we believe that every child deserves love and nurturing as they learn and develop. We also believe that most parents truly love their children and want to be good parents; but we also know that parenting can be tough. Many parents feel isolated in the difficult job of parenting and need information, skills and support to become positive, nurturing influences in their children’s lives.

SCAN’s Parent Education Program provides direct support, education and resources to parents and caregivers across Northern Virginia through:

Parenting Classes

SCAN offers a series of classes in both English and Spanish using the Nurturing Parenting Program® curriculum that help families learn how to care for one another. In these classes, participants learn about child development, how to communicate physical and emotional needs, establishing routines for regular family activities, effective discipline methods, handling stress, and building family cohesion.

Educational Parent Support Groups

The support group provides parents with a network of other parents who support and encourage them to keep learning and improving their relationships with their children. Parents learn good parenting skills through modeling; rebuild their self-image by sharing; and grow by reaching out to others. Education parent support groups have no start or end date, so parents can join at any time.

Parent Resource Center

SCAN’s online Parent Resource Center provides easy-to-read information for parents in a wide variety of formats, from fact sheets to audio segments.

Parent Connection Resource Guide

SCAN’s Parent Connection Resource Guide is the region’s only comprehensive listing of current parenting classes, support groups, workshops and other events and resources for families across Northern Virginia. Published on a semi-annual basis, the guide is FREE and available for download HERE.
