The Carol Cleary Fund
One of SCAN’s most devoted supporters passed away this fall but her spirit of compassion, vision for children, and dedication to local families will live on through SCAN of Northern Virginia’s programs. Carol Cleary died early Sunday morning, October 6, 2013. A vibrant, energetic community member, wife, mother, and grandmother, Carol was taken from us after a 7-week battle with pancreatic cancer. Her family is comforted in some measure by having had the opportunity to share heartfelt goodbyes and knowing that Carol is now free of suffering and at peace.

Carol grew up in Minnesota, the daughter of a building contractor whose specialty was building solid up-scale houses that would withstand the rigors of Minnesota weather. The years spent observing her father’s business gave her insight into details of construction, as well as financial and emotional aspects of buying and selling houses.
In 1976, she came to Alexandria with her husband Dave, and their daughter Erin, for Dave to serve an appointment as a White House Fellow. Carol spent the next 12 years devoting herself to raising their family. Then, Carol began a real estate career in 1986 as a realtor with McEnearney Associates, Inc in Old Town Alexandria. Recognized as one of the top twenty residential agents in Northern Virginia in 1999 and 2001 by the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors, she continued her success by achieving the status of top residential agent at McEnearney Associates, Inc. for 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.
Carol also supported her husband, Dave, and his vision for a local organization in Northern Virginia that would be devoted to preventing child abuse and ensuring that every local child could have the opportunity to grow up in a safe, stable, nurturing home. In 1988, Dave founded SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia. In the early years, Dave and Carol provided space in their basement for the fledgling organization. Even as the organization gained capacity for its own staff and office space, Carol continued to support Dave’s vision by helping identify potential supporters. She was a regular participant in SCAN events – always with a smile and a word of encouragement.
Carol was an inspiration to many of us. She believed in each of us in ways that made us stronger and wiser. She will be terribly missed but her legacy will live on through SCAN’s work. Her husband Dave and daughter Erin have established the Carol Cleary Fund at SCAN to honor Carol’s dedication to the organization’s mission and ensure her legacy and spirit continue to support SCAN’s work in Northern Virginia.
